When writing a letter

Use the proper form of address. On the envelope and inside address, the Governor and legislators are called "The Honorable" (The Honorable John Smith). In the salutation of the letter refer to the indivdual as "Governor," "Senator," Assemblyman" or Assemblywoman."

  • Identify any bill by number and "nickname," e.g. S-878, "Prohibition on Flag Burning."
  • Identify yourself as a registered voter in your district.
  • Give specific reasons for supporting or opposing a bill. Your own personal experience is your best supporting evidence.
  • Be concise and straightforward. One page is sufficient.
  • Time your letter to arrive when the bill is being considered. Check with your local legislative chairperson or go to www.njea.org and check on "Lobbying and Political Action. Click on "Take Action" and then on "Bill Status Search" for updated information on bills.
  • PROOFREAD! Mistakes in spelling and grammar destroy a letter's effectiveness.
  • Be a cyberlobbyist ... Its easy if you follow the following.
    • To contact your legislator with the click of your mouse do the following.
    • Sign on to the NJEA web site shown below.

    • To contact any NJ legislator, click on  www.njea.org above. Go to CONTACTS, LEGISLATIVE PROGRAM, NEW JERSEY LEGISTATIVE DISTRICTS and scroll to the district you want.
  • Do not ask a sponsor to support his/her own bill
  • Do not threaten, flatter, or philosophize.
  • For maximum effectiveness, do not use a form letter, postcard, or a copy of another person's letter.
  • If you prefer to use mailgrams, call Wester Union office or 800 325 6000 to telegraph your message.
