          When do I need a permit?

If you are building, remodeling or adding onto your house or business, a permit is required.
The Building Department will determine whether or not a Zoning or Planning Board appearance is necessary.
 


          What are examples of ordinary repairs that do not require a permit?

Exterior and interior painting.
Repair or replacement of any interior or exterior trim.
Replacement or installation of any flooring material.
Repair of existing siding with like material “not” exceeding 25% of the total building exterior wall within any 12 month period.
Repair of existing roofing material not exceeding 25% of the total roof area within any 12 month period.
Replacement of exterior gutters and leaders.
Applying driveway sealer.



          What is required when doing interior alterations in a residence?

Completed required applications.
(2) sets of detailed plans signed and sealed by the Architect.
(Homeowner is permitted to draw and sign their own plans.)
Electrical wiring diagram or piping diagram if included in the work.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.



          What is required for plumbing/electrical/fire work?

Completed appropriate applications.
Electrical wiring and/or gas piping requires a diagram of the work.
A copy of estimate or a list of materials and total cost.
If you are doing a fire alarm system, contractor must be licensed by the State of New Jersey.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.



          What is required when building a deck?

A sealed survey showing the deck and distances to property lines.
A completed zoning application.
(2) copies of construction drawings of the deck.
A copy of estimate and a list of materials.
Contractor license and insurance certificate.
Signed and completed building folder and technical application.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.
Footings require a Dig Number.  Call 811 for Dig Number.
 


          What is required when building a fence?

If fence pertains to the entire property:

A survey of the property showing location of fence.

Payment of permit application fees when approved.

If
fence pertains to a pool:

A sealed survey showing location of fence.

A copy of estimate or a list of materials and cost.
A brochure of the fence.
Contractor license and insurance certificate.
Signed and completed building folder and technical application.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.



          What is required when building a shed?

If shed is over 10' x 10':

A sealed survey showing the shed on the property with dimensions to the property lines.
                             
Completed building applications with jacket.
Contractors license including insurance certificate.
(2) copies of structural drawings of shed.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.

 

If shed is under 10’ x 10’:

A sealed survey of the property showing the shed and the dimensions
to the property lines.
The appropriate fees when application is approved.



          What is required when putting on a roof or siding?

Completed building applications with jacket.
Contractors license including insurance certificate.
Copy of estimate or a list of materials and total cost.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.



          What is required when installing a heating/ac system?

Completed appropriate applications.
A copy of estimate and a list of materials and total cost.
Brochure on heating or ac unit.
Diagram of electrical wiring or gas piping.
Indicate where unit will be installed, i.e.: attic, basement, utility room.
All heating units must have the completed chimney certification form.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.



          What is required when installing a generator?

Completed appropriate applications.
A survey showing where the generator will be placed including the distance to property lines.
A brochure or specification sheet with size of generator & fuel type.
Payment of permit application fee when approved.



          What is required when building a pool?

Completed zoning application for the appropriate zone with a sealed survey (topo) showing the distances to the property lines with lot coverage calculations shown.
Home Improvement contractor’s license & insurance.
Completed building, electrical, plumbing & fire technical forms.
Plumbing and Electrical applications must be sealed by a Licensed N.J. contractor.
A separate building permit for the pool fence with specifications of the kind of fencing.
A brochure of the fence.
If a heater is being installed it must be on survey.
Sealed specifications of the pool.
Brochures on pool filter, pump and heater.
List of materials and total cost.
For plumbing, technical information required showing the kind of piping to be used, including length of piping and size.
Payment of permit application fees when approved.
